Are you thriving at work on world mental health day?

Tuesday 10th October 2017 is World Mental Health Day, and the theme this year is “Workplace Well-being”. The aim of the day is to raise awareness of mental health issues, generate greater support for those affected and vitally to reduce the stigma which all too often still exists around mental health.

Physically as a society we’re becoming healthier, however sadly the same can’t be said about the health of our minds and it’s predicted that by 2030 depression will be the leading cause of illness globally.

A person’s mental health pervades all aspects of their life, whether that’s their personal life, relationships, health or indeed their work and career. According to the Mental Health Foundation, every year in the UK alone 70 million workdays are lost due to mental illness, costing the UK economy over £8 billion per year in absenteeism. And the cost for presenteeism (being physically present at work but not being fully engaged or able to fully function due to mental ill health or illness) is considerably higher, with estimates putting the cost around £15 billion p.a. The expense to the UK economy are huge, but inevitably the human cost is far greater.

If you or someone you know is one of the 1 in 4 currently struggling with a mental health issue whether that be stress, anxiety, depression, O.C.D, a panic disorder or perhaps an eating disorder, please make today the day you take action. Whether that’s to confide in a friend, ask for help from your boss or to take the first steps towards seeking professional help, make today the day you start to take back control of your mental health.
