vaginismus

Overcome your fear | Regain control

IF YOU THINK VAGINISMUS IS SOMETHING YOU’LL HAVE TO SUFFER WITH FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, THINK AGAIN...
HUNDREDS OF WOMEN HAVE LEARNED TO OVERCOME THIS PAINFUL AND DISTRESSING ISSUE WITH THE THRIVE PROGRAMME.

Are you feeling anxious about the thought of penetration? Do you avoid having sex, using tampons or keep putting off having gynaecological examinations? Is it painful when you have penetration - anything from a slight discomfort and stinging up to crippling pain or burning? Or maybe you’ve never been able to have sex or any form of vaginal penetration because it simply feels like there’s a solid brick wall barrier that prevents you physically being able to allow anything into you. These are all symptoms of a condition called Vaginismus, which whilst both difficult and distressing and many women believe they’ll be stuck with it for the rest of their life, it’s possible to overcome with the right help and support.

WHAT IS VAGINISMUS?

Also known as vaginism, it’s a fear of sex or other forms of vaginal penetration which makes sex painful (dyspareunia) or impossible. It can affect essential gynaecological examinations and even makes inserting a tampon a problem. Vaginismus occurs when the strong vaginal muscles tense, and is both a physical and emotional issue putting individuals and relationships under enormous strain.

It's almost impossible to say how many women have the condition, because so many suffer in silence, too embarrassed to talk to friends, family or even their GP. Feelings of guilt and failure manifest themselves, and women are often convinced they’re built abnormally.

You may have heard the term psychosomatic used in relation to the condition, which is misinterpreted as meaning ‘it’s all in your imagination’. In reality, psychosomatic means exactly what it says, the power of your mind blending with the power of your body. What you’re experiencing is actually a physical response caused by psychological factors.

WHAT VAGINISMUS ISN’T!

Vaginismus isn’t necessarily caused by past events. Nor is it directly attributed to factors such as sexual abuse, a strict or extremely religious upbringing or previous poor sexual experiences.

It’s possible there may be a physical cause, such as a yeast infection, which may be a contributory factor and as such, you should check with a medical professional. Eliminating anything that can be easily treated will help your decision as to how you move forward. Unfortunately, many women and medical professionals don’t have all the correct information, and this can result in misunderstanding on both cause and treatment.

  • Your first step in dealing with vaginismus is understanding exactly what’s going on.

  • With that comes the realisation that correct, knowledgeable help’s the solution.

  • Just taking that first step’s hugely empowering in itself.

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

Our thinking often becomes habitual, with our thoughts following the same well-worn path to the same conclusions. But neuroscientific studies have proven the neuroplasticity of the brain and its ability to change. Your brain can be retrained to eliminate damaging thoughts and create new positive ones. This is science FACT, not science FICTION.

HOW DOES THE ‘CURE YOUR VAGINISMUS AND THRIVE’
PROGRAMME HELP?

Firstly, it’s important to say this isn’t a therapy. It’s a practical programme focused on teaching and training and has been developed specifically to help resolve this debilitating condition. The skills and resources provided enable you to see why you think as you do, and how particular thought patterns are causing problems.

As understanding grows, and newly acquired skills and resources become second nature, you’re able to make lasting changes. The more changes you see, the easier it becomes to do. Whether this condition has been a sudden onset or whether you’ve suffered for many years, the Cure your Vaginismus and Thrive Programme facilitates fresh, robust and helpful thinking habits in just 8 weeks, which will enable you to Thrive, inside and outside of the bedroom!

The programme works by:

  • Enabling you to understand the causes of vaginismus.

  • Gaining insight into how thinking and beliefs relate to your symptoms.

  • Identifying, challenging and changing unhelpful thinking and beliefs.

  • Breaking unhelpful cycles of behaviour that perpetuate symptoms.

  • Helping you understand how your relationship may be maintaining your vaginismus and what to do about it.

  • Learning to get mind and body working for you, rather than against you.

  • Teaching you how to relax your vaginal muscles.

  • Offering you practical advice on achieving successful penetration.

  • Showing you how to transition from using dilators to enjoying sex.

BELIEFS AND MISBELIEFS!

It’s important to understand that you can ask me any questions and feel comfortable in doing so - there’s nothing you can say I haven’t already heard before:

  • Many women I see, are genuinely convinced their vagina’s too narrow, or they have a hymen that can’t be broken.

  • Many have tried treatments such as pelvic floor exercises, vaginal trainers, Botox or surgery. Sometimes they’ve been referred to a counsellor.

  • Disappointment arising from the failure of something you’ve pinned your hopes on can be devastating. Because I often see clients after that disappointment, it only confirms my belief that the cure lies in the full understanding of this condition.

Once you’ve completed the programme, you’ll:

  • Have overcome your vaginismus/dyspareunia and be able to enjoy intimacy.

  • Feel in control of both your mind and body.

  • Feel empowered to take control of your life.

  • Feel happier and more confident.

  • Have robust self-esteem.

  • Have developed greater social confidence and improved your relationship.

  • Feel calmer, more relaxed, inside and outside the bedroom

  • Have built strong psychological foundations to strengthen resilience

  • Thrive and become the best version of you.
